StartupCamp Returns.

Last Fall, I decided along with my partner Phil Telio that it was time to bring a pitch event – one that exposes early stage innovators – to telecom. While these type of events are common place these days in the Web 2.0 space, I thought it would be fun and good for the community to do something vertical. After brief discussions with the leadership over at TMC, StartupCamp Telephony was born.

Having little history to work off of, and pulling it together in a very short time frame, we had maintained relatively low expectations for Round 1. But with great support from industry friends – like Platinum sponsor Twilio, keynote speaker Jamie Siminoff and blogger/PR guy Andy Abramson, the event came off great. We packed the room with a standing room-only audience that walked away energized, and I sense a little surprised at how much they enjoyed it. Nothing like raw entrepreneurialism to jazz a crowd!

With IT Expo West looming not so far down the calendar (October 4th), we have decided to do it again. The format will be similar: we are actively recruiting very dynamic keynote speakers, sharp panelists and soon will open up the submissions for early stage startups looking for an opportunity to share their vision with an industry-educated audience.

The only difference this time around really, is the name. After much debate (arguably too much) we decided to change the name from ‘Telephony’ to StartupCamp, Comm Edition. Aside from pronunciation issues, we understood clearly from those polled that ‘Communications’ stands now as a far better descriptor of our ever changing industry.

Here is today’s announcement. Stay tuned for more ahead.
